Meet A Volunteer

Hello! My name is Cynthia and I became a CASA Volunteer in June 2023. I’m still working with the same kiddo who was assigned to me at that time. I met her for the first time in early July, and over the past two and a half years, our relationship has continued to grow in ways that are meaningful to both of us.

I decided to become a CASA Volunteer after retiring and looking for a way to give back through something purposeful. A CASA representative visited our Active Adult Community and shared this opportunity, and it immediately stood out to me. After completing training, I felt hopeful that I could truly connect with a young person. To help them feel loved, important, seen, and heard.

One of the biggest takeaways from this experience has been the power of connection. Building a relationship takes time, but it’s incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the chance to share knowledge and life experiences that might help my kiddo make positive choices in the future. Most importantly, I try to offer love, kindness, and understanding while being a consistent presences. Someone she knows she can count on.

There have been hard moments, too. It’s difficult when my kiddo, who is a loving and considerate young girl, has moments that set her back. Those moments can be heartbreaking because all any CASA Volunteer wants is to see their kiddo thrive and live well. Still, those challenges are part of the journey, and they remind me why patience and continued support matter so much.

Thankfully, there have been many heartwarming moments along the way. Over these two and a half years, we’ve shared time talking, listening, laughing, and doing fun activities together. As we’ve gotten to know each other, we’ve both grown. I truly believe our relationship has benefited us both.

If someone is thinking about becoming a CASA Volunteer, I would tell them this: it’s a commitment. It can be challenging, but it can also be deeply rewarding. Go into it for the child, not for yourself, and you’ll discover just how meaningful that choice can be.
