Meet A Volunteer

Hi! We are Sonya and Mike Starr, a tag team CASA Volunteer couple and we have been with CASA since May of 2021. We recently started our fourth case.

How did we decide to get involved with CASA? Well, over the years we saw many cases on the news of children who had experienced abuse and neglect, and we wanted to do something to help. We were introduced to CASA in the Spring of 2021 and recognized it as an opportunity to make a positive impact.

Amidst all the activity on a case, a CASA has the privilege and responsibility to be solely focused on the child’s needs and advocate for their best interests.

There have been so many heartwarming moments as CASA Volunteers. The most touching moment for us was attending the adoption ceremony for a child who had been taken in as an infant and raised for two years by two loving guardians. It was a perfect resolution for the new family, and the child’s future looks very bright.

Being a CASA Volunteer is not without its challenges, and some cases can have outcomes that are hard to accept. When we experienced this on a case, we were initially disappointed but were very soon reminded why CASA is important. Our feelings are not the priority—advocating for these children is. This experience has reinforced the importance of CASA and strengthened our commitment to its mission.

We highly recommend becoming a CASA Volunteer. You can make a tremendous difference in a child’s life!
